Government officials are spending taxpayer dollars preparing for a zombie apocalypse, according to Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn's annual report on wasteful security spending.
The report, "Safety at Any Price," identifies millions of dollars the Department of Homeland Security dished out for programs to install underwater robots and remote-control helicopters.
According to the report, DHS has paid more than $35 billion trying to keep Americans in cities across the country safer, but Coburn says some of the money was spent unwisely. Coburn calls attention to $1,000 that was spent sending law enforcement to an event that included a live demonstration of how to take down zombies at a HALO counterterrorism summit in California.
The civilian tactical training company Strategic Operations "was hired to put on a zombie driven show to simulate a real-life terrorism event," the report says.
The HALO Corporation called the report misleading and untrue.
"The report's suggestion that Department of Homeland Security and Urban Areas Security Initiative funds were used to pay for the zombie apocalypse training is absolutely untrue," said Brad Barker, president of the HALO corporation. He added the program was put on by a sponsor and no taxpayer money was spent.
"At a time when our $16 trillion national debt is our greatest national security threat, we must make sure that all programs, especially those meant to prevent terrorism, are achieving their mission," Coburn said in the report released December 5. "For instance, paying for first responders to attend a HALO Counterterrorism Summit at a California island spa resort featuring a simulated zombie apocalypse does little to discourage potential terrorists."

“Zombie apocalypse? Economic zombies thrive off of state spending” with a rather conservative definition for politics’ zombies. The summary says:
Funded by cheap credit and government spending, Bonner foresees an impending war ahead between the zombies — people who take money from the productive sector of the economy and transfer it to themselves — and the productive parts of the economy.
And while this is an obvious metaphoric comparison (welfare recipients as zombies) I find it jarring in comparison to ideas of zombies as exploited labor. Recall the original zombies working all night in sugar mills.
Bonner’s article is primarily about Solyndra lobbying and drone strike killings but he writes:
dear reader, the zombies are everywhere. Lobbying. Spending. Getting disability and bailouts. Every US government program is full of zombies.
Something about this definition feels wrong to me. Perhaps it’s the way Bonner uses active voice to say “zombies are people who take money from the productive sector of the economy and transfer it to themselves.” It sounds intentional and more like a vampire’s bloodsucking, whereas zombies lack intent. And Bonner’s implication that we should cut spending on ‘education’ seems a surefire recipe for making even more unproductive zombies.
Why so many zombies? What you pay for is what you get. And with the “new” dollar after 1971, the feds could buy a lot of zombies.
Remember, zombies are people who take money from the productive sector of the economy and transfer it to themselves. As they grow more numerous and more powerful — thanks to the resources that go their way — the productive part of the economy is less and less able to support them.
Fewer and fewer workers…more and more zombies.
Fewer and fewer people producing things…while more and more people just consume them.
Everything is okay as long as the resources keep flowing. But the productive sector of society can only support so many zombies. Yes, the producers can be bamboozled into supporting more “education” and more “defense” when they are flush. But when times get tough, the zombies and the producers head for a showdown.

And except that it’s all anti-Obama rhetoric, I am really not sure why Bonner connects Solyndra, drone strikes and zombies.

The Department of Homeland Security has put out yet another solicitation requesting hundreds of millions of hollow point rounds, this time 200 million rounds of .223 and .308 for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, to be obtained over two years, with 40 million the first year and 160 million the second.
For the .308, the agency has ordered two types: blanks and hollow points. The blanks will be sent to two locations in the southeast and Puerto Rico, with the hollow points going throughout the entire country. Blanks are used in movies and television, but can also be used to teach new shooters proper breathing and control of the trigger.
This is the latest order by the DHS of hundreds of millions of rounds of hollow point ammo. Back in March, the agency purchased 450 million rounds of .40 caliber ammunition from the ATK company out of Minnesota. This was followed in April by a solicitation for another 750 million rounds, including .357 magnum rounds that are capable of penetrating walls. This comes out to a total of 1.2 billion rounds.
The DHS has so far refused to say why they are purchasing billions of rounds, as this is an unusually large amount. When more people started questioning these purchases, the DHS responded by classifying information, blacking out certain sections of a solicitation, including portions pertaining to 64 and 65 grain .223 ammo and the number being requested.
Other agencies have also begun buying large quantities of ammo, including the National Weather Service’s order of 46,000 hollow point rounds, and 174,000 .357 magnum rounds ordered by the Social Security Administration. Though the SSA has explained away their purchase as being typical for agents and the NWS claims that the purchase was a “clerical error” and was actually for NOAA's Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement, the reasons for the DHS’s purchases still remain unknown.
Because law enforcement agents typically carry hollow point rounds, the large number ordered might be assumed to be used for training; however, hollow points are not used for target practice. For training, full metal jacket rounds are used. Hollow points are too expensive. They are also incredibly deadly, so much so that the Geneva Convention has forbidden their use in warfare, though law enforcement is allowed to use them. When a hollow point round hits the body, the round expands, limiting penetration but causing more tissue damage.
