Argentine gov't rejects international probe of prosecutor's death
Published January 30, 2015EFE
Argentina on Friday rejected a U.S. lawmaker's call for an international enquiry into the death of the prosecutor who had accused President Cristina Fernandez and other officials of concealing the involvement of Iran in a deadly 1994 terrorist attack targeting a Jewish organization in Buenos Aires.
Argentina "is an autonomous and independent country," Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich said during his daily press briefing, calling Sen. Marco Rubio's proposal the expression of an "imperial vision" that "ignores the principal of national self-determination."
Rubio, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs, sent a letter Thursday to U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, saying that he was "deeply concerned about the ability of the government of Argentina to conduct a fair and impartial investigation."
Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, who sought to indict Fernandez, Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and five other people in connection with his probe of the car-bomb attack that left 85 dead at the offices of the Jewish organization AMIA, was found fatally shot on Jan. 18.
He was scheduled to testify the following day before Congress about his accusations.......

Friday, January 30, 2015Capitanich to US Rubio: Argentina accepts no foreign intromission, imperialist visions
GOP Senator Marco Rubio.
A request by US Republican Senator Marco Rubio to create an “independent” committee to investigate the death of Argentine AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman has been described by Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich as an “imperialist” approach to “sovereign” countries' affairs.
“The Republic of Argentina is an autonomous, sovereign and independent country. (Marco) Rubio with his imperialist vision fails to recognize the United Nations charter since the intromission in the affairs of other states constitutes an interference of an imperialist vision,” the head of ministers said this morning during his daily message to the press at the government house.
Rubio, he added, “represents the most recalcitrant republican right.”
“Rubio’s statements represent free and groundless insults towards a country as the Argentine Republic (where) we accept no intromission of any country to settle domestic controversies,” Capitanich insisted.
The US senator yesterday urged US Secretary of State John Kerry to support the creation of an “independent, internationally assisted investigation” into the death of Alberto Nisman, the prosecutor in charge of investigating the bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center back in 1994 that killed 85 people in the City of Buenos Aires.
“The suspicious death of Alberto Nisman (...) deserves greater attention by this Administration,” Rubio wrote in a letter to Kerry.
“I am increasingly concerned about the ability of the Government of Argentina to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into his death, or its capacity to ensure the independence of a prosecutor that would continue Mr. Nisman’s decade-long work. I thus urge the Administration to support the establishment of an independent, internationally assisted investigation into Mr. Nisman’s suspicious death.”
