U.S. must stop supporting Israel and other radicals
Editor:
During the past several decades, we have witnessed the radicalization of religion throughout the world. An excellent example of this was in Northern Ireland between Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians. It has since improved there, and they live in relative peace with each other. During this past decade we have witnessed radical Islam taking the front stage in various places: al Qaeda and its affiliates in the Middle East and now in India; al Shabaab in Somalia; the Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt; Boko Haram in Nigeria; the Nusra Front in the Golan heights of Syria, which was annexed and occupied by Israel; and more recently the so-called Islamic State of North Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS). One could add to this political Zionism in Israel, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who will not allow for a two-state solution for the Palestinians and whose military has slaughtered almost 2,000 innocent men, women and children and wounded thousands more in Gaza over a one-month period. The radicalization has been equally felt in Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin of Russia flexes his muscles as he has annexed the Crimea while trying to do the same in Ukraine. In this sad situation, it is one Orthodox Christian country against another Orthodox Christian country. When will all this extremist behavior end so that people in their respective countries can live in relative peace? Only God knows for sure! As for radical Islam, it is incumbent on the United States and its allies, in NATO as well as in Arab countries, to protect the citizens who cannot defend themselves from the barbaric behavior of the extremists. Sunnis, Shias, Alawites, Druzes, all sects of Islam, are slaughtering each other. Their sacred teachings in the Qur’an forbid this behavior of brother against brother, and this teaching includes the “people of the Book” (Jews and Christians and other minorities). As for radical Zionism, it is incumbent that the United States stop funding Israel until its government recognizes the human and civil rights of the Palestinian people and accepts a two-state solution. As for radical Russia trying to restore its leadership over former Soviet Union countries, it is incumbent that the West stand firm and assist those countries in their struggle for freedom. Where are the moderate voices in today’s world? We need to hear from more moderate Muslims, Jews, Christians and other minorities and stop supporting the radicalization of religious groups.
